I like how they show the A1 in unpainted plywood. Could you get cabs that way from the factory?

The early paint was very thin, more like a stain. You can see the grain thru it pretty clearly, and i think that's what they're illustrating. Or, maybe we're looking at two different things

I was looking at this one. I know the ones you are talking about with the thinner paint though. They are gray but you can see the grain of the plywood still

Even the horn has a wood-grain look.

Re the finish: 1945 - the war has probably ended. How long would it take for the Navy to get excess stocks of 'battleship gray' paint to surplus dealers? I would say, not quickly.
